Crime taking a bite out of N. Portland

Nov. 09    McGruff the crime fighting dog is seriously needed at the overwhelmed North Precinct these days as hardly a week goes by that some business isn't a crime victim.  Particularly hard hit are merchants along N. Killingsworth, and parts of N. Lombard.  What appears to be mostly younger males, one or more at a time are nocking over businesses.  Usually this happens after the business has closed, however, in at least one instance an employee was working inside at the same time.

Residential crime is also increasing in N. Portland, particularly in theft from cars.  Targeted are not only residential neighborhood on street parking, but parking lots that are off the street and in some cases not visible from a main street or intersection.

If you are a crime victim, BE SURE to call the police.  Staffing of the N. Precinct is largely determined by the number of crimes (police call these incidents) that take place within the boundary of the precinct.  It also helps detectives see patterns of crime for more effective assignment of patrol officers.  You are encouraged to send an email to npba_newsletter@yahoo.com which will generate a "heads up" email to all NPBA members. Sharing information is the best way to combat what appears to be a challenge that the police are not equiped to handle alone.

Trader Joe's - Yes or No?

An ongoing poll for the kinds of stores to add in St. Johns, and in particular what would be the best fit for the former Sterling Auto Sales corner, has consistently rated a Trader Joe's Store as a top candidate.  Two years ago NPBA Office Manager, Evie Salvo sent a warm welcoming letter to the TJ management in the hopes of determing the possibility of a store.  While thanking her for the interest, their response was essentially we did not have a dense enough population to support a TJ store.

But it is an idea that won't die, and as it continues to have a life of its own, NPBA took the lead to ask about a store in St. Johns again.  This time, NPBA President Jim Schaller discussed the idea in a telephone call to the Vice President of Store Placement for Trader Joe's, during the week of August24th.

The VP said that their marketing demographics prove that TJ stores do well when two things are present.  First, a population density of at least 150,000 in a 3 mile radius of the store location.  Second, their must be a large percentage of Bachelor and Master Degree holders within that population.   So go get that degree soon, build a skinny house next door to increase our population density and we can ask Trader Joe's to build a store in a few years.

What's in a Name?

July 09.  A lot when you think about having a "brand" attached to where your business is located.  Consider such brands as the Pearl District, Hollywood, Downtown and the Lloyd Center, even St. Johns.  Each brings to mind some picture and attached emotion or experiences.  Without a brand name you might say you are "nowhere in particular."

Greg Wilhelm, Chair of the Portsmouth Neighborhood Assoc, and a member of the ICURAC (Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Advisory Committee) is working hard to steer approximately 1 million dollars of PDC urban renewal money to N. Lombard businesses.  Portsmouth Neighborhood as a designee for this help would like to see the funds channelled into improvements along N. Lombard that is the South boundary of the Portsmouth Neighborhood Assoc.  As part of that effort he sees a need to brand that strip of N. Lombard begining at N. Woolsey and extending to N. Carey (the railroad cut).

An effort to name this section has been addressed by both PNA and the University Park Neighborhood Assoc, with the most popular name being the University Park District.  This name capitalizes on the name familiarity of the University of Portland and the umbrella like effect of the campus spanning a good portion of this part of N. Lombard.

Greg states he "would like to see as much input from the businesses on N. Lombard as possible."  If you would like to suggest other names to be considered, send them to npba_newsletter@yahoo.com

2009 Summer Event = Fun

     The Caribe Restaurant, 5225 N.
