PUBLIC SAFETY ACTION COMMITTEE (PSAC)

Open to all, this monthly meeting discusses crime and related problems related to North Portland.  The group meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month, 7-9 pm at the Kenton Firehouse.  A number of other city agencies attend the meeting as problems have a way of crossing over and involving several partners in creating solutions.

Business Owners Help the Police to Help You

Lets say that some suspicious characters are hanging out around your business at night when you are not there and the business is closed.  Perhaps they are loitering in your parking lot - not doing anything criminal, but from the trained eye of a patrolman he knows they are up to no good.  In order for the officer to confront these people on your property, he must get permission from you.  It's 2am in the morning and the officer is reluctant to make the call.  So he leaves the area to take another call.  The next day a robbery report is filed, your store was broken into overnight and the interior was trashed.  Could this have been handled differently?  You Bet!  If you had filled out a no treaspass agreement, the officer could have immediately began questioning these people without having to get your permission.  Every store owner should have one on file.  It costs nothing, helps the police to do a better job, and helps keep your property safe.  Download the form here.

PROBLEM NEIGHBOR?

ESP (Enhanced Safety Properties Program) is a nationwide program, this is being adopted by the Portland Police Department.  It is in response to neighbors that encounter residential properties that are mismanaged, resulting in obnoxious behaviors, criminal activity and liveability problems.  If your business is located next to this type of residential property, you can do something about it.  The program requires the owner to attend land-lord training.  Several other tools can be employed by the assistance team.  Contact Havilah Ferschweiler (see below)

KNOW YOUR NRT TEAM

All businesses in North Portland are automatically a member of their local Neighborhood Association.  As part of the Community Policing effort, we have a Neighborhood Response Team (NRT) that are officers from North Precinct assigned to certain geographical areas. Their primary focus is to work with their specific neighborhood associations, community members, block captains (Block Watch) and crime prevention coordinators to help with problems that are too large and complex for a single patrol officer or neighborhood association to address alone.  As an automatic member of your neighborhood association, this is a great place to not only network with some of your customers but to share problems that jointly affect you and where your business is located.  Your NRT officer is listed below in the "Roster"
